Pocket Pet Services

We provide care for gerbils, guinea pigs, hamsters and other small but mighty pocket pets.

If you’re new to having a pocket pet, they must receive the necessary medical care so you can continue to enjoy your time with your beloved pet. Some common pocket pets we support include gerbils, guinea pigs and hamsters.

What type of veterinary care do pocket pets need?

Just because they’re small doesn’t mean they can’t benefit from veterinary attention. Teeth, which grow continuously in gerbils, guinea pigs, and hamsters, often require trimming. We can also recommend appropriate chew toys, which may help keep the teeth worn down. Parasites, such as lice, mites, and fleas can infest your pet. In addition, these companion animals can suffer from other health issues.

What supplies do I need for my pocket pet?

Depending on the pocket pet you choose, they’ll need specific items to meet their needs. For example, hamsters enjoy moving around and staying active. This means they’ll need a cage with enough space and toys that encourage movement, like a hamster wheel. Guinea pigs have a Vitamin C deficiency, so you’ll need supplements, along with a variety of food to support their dietary needs. For Gerbil, avoid adding cedar or pine shavings to the bottom of their habitats, since it could be harmful to them. Instead, opt for dye-free paper.

Should I be concerned if my pocket pet is quieter than usual?

Pocket pets have shorter lifespans so it’s important to bring them in when you notice sudden changes in their health. The quicker we’re able to identify and treat certain health issues the sooner you’ll be back home with your pet, enjoying their company. Contact us at 613-748-9820 if your pet stops eating, loses weight, appears quieter than usual, has discharge from the eyes or nose, or develops a lump on its body.
